Profile - Four Year Strong (2008)
Four Year Strong consists of five Worchester natives who take pride in making a lot of not quite power pop, hardcore or punk, noise. Don’t let this difficulty defining their sound discourage you, if anything the eclectic mixture of style gives the band’s sound a nice fresh feel that sits somewhere between a Mayday Parade type vocal layering and a impressive Enter Shikari energy level. It’s not surprising then that the band have shared a stage with the likes of Hellogoodbye, Hit The Lights, Houston Calls, and Hidden In Plain View.

Review - Brand New (2007)
The 9th of June was a cold, rainy day. Somewhere in Newcastle a huge ship was getting better acquainted with a beach, a bunch of people at Luna Park were cursing the unlimited rides that came with their Come Together tickets (held in the rain for the second year running), and after nightfall an eclectic sold out crowd were packing snugly into the UNSW Roundhouse. Within seconds the cloak room had run out of plastic bags for all the jackets but no one really seemed to care, after a long wait for the band’s return, the expectant crowd was saving all their attention and energy for Brand New. It’s a good thing they did.

Profile - Say Anything (2007)
No, not the movie, the band. But if you were thinking of the 1989 John Cusak flick of the same name, then you’re right…kind of. Front man Max Bemis, did indeed name his band after the movie because he felt he could relate to the main character, one Lloyd Dobler. Really, once you’ve given Say Anything a spin, that isn’t at all suprising.

Profile - Drive By (2007)
An east coast quintet with a unique high energy post punk sound, Drive By is definitely a band to pay attention to. The band can be said to have been started by current vocalist and guitarist Todd Price, and it is his demons that form the subject matter for the songs.

Nick Hornby (2007)
Born in Surry, England, Hornby is a very relatable novelist, tackling fiction and non fiction with the same style and ease. The thing that makes his work so transcendent is undoubtedly the humour as well as the common themes that run through his work, namely sport, music and the obsessive personalities.

Shine On (2007)
In 1980 a baby boy was born. This baby grew into a man that formed part of a change in the subconscious of many a music fan. That man wasJohn Lennon (you may remember him from such bands such as The Beatles). In fact, he is considered to be so influential that in 2004 Rolling Stone ranked him as number 38 on their fifty greatest artists list, with the Beatles taking out the number one spot. Not bad considering he died nearly thirty years ago.

B-Side Baby (2006)
Did you know that ‘We will rock you’, arguably Queen’s most widely recognised hit, was actually a b-side to ‘We are the champions’? Interestingly enough, The Smiths’ classic ‘How soon is now?’ originally started out as a bonus track to ‘William, it was really nothing’ before its popularity earned it a separate release. So with these clear examples of what quality can lay lurking as an often ignored extra track, it’s time someone pointed out some of the best b-sides around and get the ball rolling for finding those hidden gems…

Characterisation (exercise 2007)
In the final week of February, waning rays of sunshine seep into everything, determined to make the last few days of summer count. The glow baked everything left in its path, and people shun windows seeking relief from the assault. In this particular train carriage, it was no different. “Next station Turella.”
